RARE Charles Dickens Autographed/Handwritten Letter on Gads Hill Letterhead 1860

RARE Charles Dickens Autographed/Handwritten Letter on Gads Hill Letterhead 1860. Written on Gads Hill Place, Higham by Rochester Kent.

Water marked laid cotton paper. Dated Friday, 20th July, 1860.

Addressed to Sir Alexander Cornewall Duff-Gordon, 3rd Baronet of Halkin. Dickens is corresponding with the Baronet inquiring about the possible recommendation for a school for his 2 youngest sons. He mentions the meal they had together at Tavistock House (Dickens lived at Tavistock House between 1851 and sometime in 1860). Gads Hill Place was also one of Dickens' residences where he wrote many of his most famous novels.

The date of the letter places it between the books A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations which came out in monthly parts in 1860. Much of Dickens personal correspondence was destroyed by Dickens himself only a couple of months after the date of this letter.

This is one of the few surviving letters dealing exclusively with his personal life and friendships not dealing with any of his books! 4 3/8" wide by 7 1/8" tall. One sheet possibly trimmed down from the typical 2 sheets normally associated with his personal Gads Hill Place paper. Written in Indigo blue ink clean and clear! Typical flowing signature at bottom.

On laid, water-marked rag type paper only a little darkened with age possibly the original shade! Tipped onto a piece of laid paper. Glue along top edge only and NOT discolored. NOTE: outside of the U. See photos for condition description.
