357 with ten hits in the eight game series over the tainted Chicago White Sox now dubbed as the famous Black Sox scandal. Incredible three (3) page handwritten signed letter from Pro Football Hall of Fame and College Hall of Fame member Greasy Neale. Dated 1965 from his West Virginia home, Neale thanks the recipient for his hard work advocating for his election into the Hall of Fame. (Neale would be elected in 1969). In so doing, Neale provides a personally insightful summary providing details and data of his fabulous career, I coached 1 year at Muskingum 1915 2 years at W.
Wesleyan, 2 years at Marietta in my six years of coaching I took the W. (Washington & Jefferson) team to the Rose Bowl you remember the result it was in 1921 Another year at W. 1922 when I met Jock Sutherland Lafayette team at the Polo Grounds both undefeated in 2 years We won 14 to 13 in this game I used the 1. Fake reverse to win Six years at the Univ of Va without a scholarship Which I consider my greatest coaching because our boys were there in many cases boys who had not made their Prep school team regular.
I resigned from a 3 year contract to become Bell Southworths 3 base coach in 1929 St. Va Univ years of the depression not too good of a record as far as win or lose is concerned then 1934 through 1940 backfield coach Q. Coach under Ducky Pond at Yale We had a great record there but the Honor Court does not count the seven years I was at Yale Altho (sp) I change Yale idea of kicking on 3. Down and not passing unless you were past your own 40 yd line on this coaching staff at Yale in 1934 was not a man who had coaching on a varsity team and I had 16 years of being head coach of college teams During these 16 years I first used the tripple reverse I gave it to Pop Warner in 1917 the man to man defense in 1916 the fake reverse in 1922 the studder series in 1942 the pitch out series in 1943 and the Eagle Defense I know these plays and defense in Pro football does not count but some of them are used today in college football at least they added to the great game of football whether they came oujt of Pro or from college I spent in my book as a coach in college 23 years 16 of them as head coach the other 7 running a coaching school for a Yale coaching staff one of which later was a great coach at Lafayette and U of Wis. Again I want to thank you for all of this effort.
