Penned in his difficult to decipher hand, a warm letter to his mother, Eleanor Louisa Henry, an illegitimate daughter of the British astronomer Richard Sheepshanks, in part: Your dear kind letter was very consoling to get & I often think of & wish for the the presence of the one person living who. Has wished me well for 45 years.

I don't think I have anything much to complain of. Any troubles I have had have been of my own making.

Few people have been allowed to realize their ambitions more easily than I have. " Sickert also writes affectionately of a recent visit by his younger brother Robert: "He has kept... A sort of absurd chirpiness, which seems to arm him against ills that would crush most people's spirits & courage. He is cultivating his literary perceptions, & I think he will find both pleasure & profit in the work he has taken up. In fine condition, with light creasing and intersecting folds.

FULL TRANSCRIPTION IS AS FOLLOWS. Your dear kind letter was very consoling to get. I often think of & wish for the presence of the one person living who must have wished me well for 45 years. Yet as I can only just live in France, I suppose I couldn't live at all in England.

Dare say how I shall sooner or later be able to make more frequent visits to London. I have been so happy to have Robert here. He always remains to me the beautiful, .. , affectionate child of the photograph you have with rosettes on his ears.

He has kept, by a.. providence, a sort of absurd chirpiness, which seems to arm him against ills that would crush most people's spirits & courage.

He is cultivating his literary perceptions & I think he will find both pleasure & profit in the work he has taken up. Let us hope that his sight will last as long as he does. He is happy in having a mother who loves him, & if he survives her, four brothers & a sister, any one of whom would always take the tenderest care of him.

His sense of self-preservation seems to be very alert & highly-developed. He may very likely putter carefully into as respectable an age as any of us. I will certainly go & see your friend Mr. I will ask him to tea - the only entertainment I dispense. I always question whether it is a favour I confer by doing this, when you set against the tea & pull up the dreary Route.. And now I expect to see dear Oswald on Friday'.. I have found out one thing, that I walk too much. Up & down the hill 3 times a day was too much. I remember also you came to see my & stayed at.. , how I always went to sleep after dinner though goodness knows I was glad to be with you & had enough to say to you.

Since, I have taken care not to go down more than once a day. A bientot I hope my dear dear mother.

Walter Sickert's hand-writing is indeed a challenge to decipher. There were a couple of words in English which my friend and I couldn't figure out or may have gotten wrong. There were also a couple of French and German expressions/words which we couldn't decipher. If Sickert had written clearly, we probably could have transcribed them, but not being fluent in those languages, we were not able to figure them out - with the exception of the closing "A bientot" which is a French expression.
